Narayan’s Novels : A Cerebration of the Carnival attempts to answer the debate on the view that critical theory is a self-sufficient entity, detached from literature. Its esoteric status renders it inaccessible and so the ethics of such an activity is suspected. The book seeks to show that theory would actually help the reader to be sensitive to the matter of the text and even provide an insight into the architectonics of literary creation. Above all, the book attempts to communicate the message that the integrated energy of creativity inherent in literature would modify theory, saving it from reification.
The book applies Bakhtin’s theories on selected fictions of R.K. Narayan to show that the relation between theory and literature is dialogic and promotes open-ended truths. Bakhtin’s theory of the carnival in literature motivates a Copernican revolution in the approach to literature. Contrary to popular ideas, Narayan’s novels are episodic rather than epistemological, serious rather than mere caricatures, and depict a different reality about India hitherto unsuspected.
The book will be useful to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of English literature. It presents a satire of religious excess. When it was written, politics and religion were so closely linked in England, that the religious and political aspects of the satire could not be separated.
The story revolves around the exploits of three sons, Peter, Martin and Jack, representing the main threads of Christianity, viz. Catholic, Anglican, and Puritan, respectively. They receive a bequest from their father, of a coat each, with instructions that no alterations whatsoever may be made in the coats. After some time, the sons find that their coats have fallen out of current fashion. They begin to look for loopholes in their father’s will so that they may make the alterations they want. Each son finds his own means of getting around their father’s admonition, and they struggle with each other for power and dominance.
A Tale of a Tub is essentially an allegory. The altering of coats stands for changing the faith. The will of the father represents the Bible. The original state of the coats stands for primitive Christianity. Swift’s satire is unique in the sense that it offers no resolutions. While he ridicules any number of foolish habits, he never offers the reader a positive set of values to embrace. Since Swift does not state what his ideal point is, it is difficult to be clear about the moral thrust of the work.
The book remains one of the top classics in English Literature. Robert Hendrickson notes in his book British Literary Anecdotes that Swift was always partial to his strikingly original The Tale of a Tub. The stories are of diverse origins and have descended to modern times through a number of sources.
It is believed that the first printed version of Aesop’s Fables in English was published in 1484 by William Caxton. Many other versions, in prose and verse, have followed over the centuries.
Children were supposed to be the main readers of Aesop’s fables so that they “might learn, at the same time and from the same book, both moral and linguistic purity”. Well-known English philosopher, John Locke was the first person to advocate that they were “apt to delight and entertain a child … yet afford useful reflection to a grown man.” They will not only entertain but also provide people with serious thoughts.
The stories became popular as a means of protecting the innocence of children from profane songs. In the 18th century the authors in the UK began to give a brief outline of the story and what was usually a longer commentary on its moral and practical meaning. The first of such works was Reverend Samuel Croxall’s Fables of Aesop and Others, newly done into English with an Application to each Fable. Another popular collection was John Newbery’s Fables in Verse for the Improvement of the Young and the Old.
The 1818 edition of The Fables of Aesop and Others is divided into three sections. The First Section contains some of Dodsley’s fables prefaced by a short prose moral; the Second Section has “Fables with Reflections” where there is a prose and verse moral after each story, followed by a lengthy prose reflection; the Third, Section “Fables in Verse” includes fables from other sources in poems.
The stories in Aesop’s Fables contain timeless lessons. Published in 1988, it received the prestigious Sahitya Academy Award in the following year. Not only literary critics but also some noted litterateurs have acclaimed it for what it has been able to achieve as a work of art. Its focus is a fact of history, the post-partition scenario of violence; but its overall form is a subtle interweaving of fact, fiction and reminiscence.
It is a novel in which Amitav Ghosh has been able to realise his artistic conception through an art form, which is cohesive. However, it remains somewhat inaccessible to some readers; they are, particularly, mystified by its non-linear mode. This volume of critical essays on The Shadow Lines is being presented in the hope that it will enable the reader to gain an insight into the meaning and structure of the novel. In the first part of the book, the contributors bring out the various aspects/elements of the novel. The second part has essays, which look at the novel from some current critical perspectives — feminist, post-colonial and historicist — but the emphasis of these essays is upon practice and not theory. The idea is that the reader learns about a specific approach by seeing it applied to the The Shadow Lines. The third part has a single but significant essay ‘The Shadow Lines in Context’ which relates the novel to Ghosh’s other works, both fiction and non-fiction. The main characters of the novel believe that while genuine expression of love has a powerful positive effect on our mind, absence of love has a devastating impact on the way we think and act. Our underestimation of the power of love has created miseries and despair within and surrounding us and has made our life unnecessarily stressful.
When cultivated positively, the all pervading power of love can provide solutions to most of the problems which confront us in this complex and often tense world. The subtle influence which the power of love exerts on our approaches has often been underestimated and thus underutilized.
In the backdrop of India-Pakistan relations, Fragrance Beyond Borders has tried to demonstrate how love can play a vital role in bringing forward the essence of goodness which is latent in every individual. God and the universe became one and the same. Now it is the universe, which is controlling the fate of the man through the seven planets and 27 constellations (Astrology). The book also attempts to prove scientifically that the man was not born from the monkey and the chimpanzee as stated by Darwin in his book The Origin of Species, but God created the organisms of all species including the man. Those species came into existence to which the environments suited and the others remained in a sleeping state. When the environment did not suit some species they became extinct and the new ones in dormant state were born. Thus, the cycle of life and death of species goes on.
The book also attempts to prove that the fate of the man depends upon his deeds and he gets the reward or punishment depending upon his good or bad deeds. The rewards or punishments, which he does not get in this life, are carried forward to the next birth which become his fate. It is not necessary that the man may get punishment immediately for his bad deeds. He may not get it till his pot is full. No amount of worshipping of God or the planets is going to help except that the man may learn a lesson to do good deeds in future. How the accounts of the deeds are maintained or how the punishment is carried over is a mystery, but there is no escape from it.
It is hoped that the readers will find this book interesting and informative.

• Author(s): William Shakespeare
• Publisher: Atlantic
• Publisher Imprint: Peacock
• Subject: English Literature

William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 – 23 April 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. The story is set in India in the backdrop of the political conflict between Russia and Britain, after the end of second Afghan war which ended in 1881. The book portrays people, culture and varied religions in India.
Kim, a boy of Irish descent who is orphaned and grows up independently in the streets of India, is taken care of by a ‘half-caste’ woman, a keeper of an opium den. Although out and out an Irish boy, he grows up as a ‘native’ and acquires the ability to seamlessly blend into the many ethnic and religious groups of the Indian subcontinent. When he meets a wandering Tibetan lama who is in search of a sacred river, Kim becomes his follower and proceeds on a journey covering the whole of India. Kipling’s account of Kim’s travels throughout the subcontinent gave him the opportunity to describe the many peoples and cultures that made the fabric of Indian society at that time. A significant portion of the novel is devoted to such descriptions, which have been lauded both as magical and visionary, and derided as stereotypical and imperialistic.
Kim eventually comes upon the army regiment that his father had belonged to and makes the acquaintance of Colonel Creighton who recognizes Kim’s great talent for blending into the many diverse cultures of India and trains him to become a spy and a mapmaker for the British army. Sir Henry retains Quatermain to guide their expedition to find Sir Henry’s brother, who had gone missing in the jungle to discover the legendary diamond mines of King Solomon. With the help of an ancient map, the adventurers set out from Durban, South Africa, and travel into the previously unexplored wilderness. For months they travel through the African bush, cross a great desert, where they almost die of thirst, and climb the snowy mountains known as “Sheba’s Breasts”, where it is so cold that they barely escape freezing to death. It is a fact that novelists, even before historians, have contributed to uncover the human tragedy of 1947 and their stories often have a declared intent to give voice to a horror which seems to elude language.
The book Partition in Fiction: Gendered Perspectives reveals how the phenomenon of Partition—which meant displacement for millions of people and claimed countless lives—was dealt with in creative works; how novelists, who belonged to different generations and literary tendencies, rendered the material and social, emotional and psychological impact that political decisions had on common men’s and women’s lives; and how, as a consequence, the individuals’ and communities’ self-perception was modified.
More specifically, the book offers a gender-based reading of Partition fiction. The underlying hypothesis in fact is that an undifferentiated approach to both men and women writers’ novels would not fully account for the respective literary tools employed to give prominence to the human experience of Partition. Thus, the analysis of the former proceeds mainly along common thematic lines, while the latter are dealt with separately, because of the great variety of strategies their authors adopt, strategies that, anyway, equally concur in the understanding of the fundamental role pressed on women as signifiers of boundaries, and consequently, as the battlefield where the integrity of community and country were contended. The individual stories had been serialized in The Strand Magazine between June 1891 and July 1892, and the book was first published in October 1892. Homes and Dr. Watson are common to all twelve stories. The stories are told by first-person narrative from the point of view of Dr. Watson.
In 1927, Doyle submitted a list of what he believed were his twelve best Sherlock Holmes stories to The Strand Magazine. Among those he listed were “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” (as his most favourite), “The Red-Headed League” (second), “A Scandal in Bohemia” (fifth) and “The Five Orange Pips” (seventh). The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was banned in the Soviet Union in 1929 because of its alleged “occultism”, but the book gained popularity in a black market of similarly banned books, and the ban was lifted in 1940.
The stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes identify and correct social injustices such as “a king’s betrayal of an opera singer; a stepfather’s deception of his ward as a fictitious lover; an aristocratic crook’s exploitation of a failing pawnbroker; and a beggar’s extensive estate in Kent.” Holmes possesses a keen sense of justice. The stories were so well received when they appeared in The Strand Magazine that they boosted the subscription of the magazine and prompted Doyle to demand more money for his next set of stories. The term archetype denotes a primordial image, character or pattern of circumstances that recurs throughout literature, history and thought consistently enough to be considered universal. Postmodern means of or relating to any of the several artistic movements that have challenged the philosophy and practices of modern art, or has amounted to reaction against ‘an order view of the world’.
This study is an attempt to understand the concept of antiheroism, dismantling the myth of the hero. It also tries to explore the relationship between antiheroism and postmodernism, and explain who is an antihero, why and how does the failure to act in a prescribed and socially accepted manner make one an antihero.
The book explores the radical world of the antiheroes, the whys and the hows, and the ensuing tragic consequences that follow their actions. The subject matter is divided into five chapters, including the Introduction and Conclusion. Using the archetype of the antihero, as existing in various cultures, the Introduction traces the trend of antiheroes, throughout the centuries, right from Marlowe’s Lucifer to Golding’s Merridew, and also analyzes the qualities that make one an antihero.
The three chapters discuss six antiheroic characters from six different novels which made a great impact in the literary world from the 1930s to the 60s: Beckett’s Molloy, Greene’s Heart of the Matter, Golding’s The Lord of the Flies, Sillitoe’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Naipaul’s A House for Mr. Biswas and Ngugi’s The Grain of Wheat, pairing the six antiheroes into three pairs according to their similarities, in nature and in situation. The novels and the characters offer a concise iconography of contemporary and postmodern corruption and disorder in one way or the other. The antihero emerges as a fragmented man deprived of his identity.
The ideas have been presented in simple language and lucid manner for easy understanding by the readers. In the American edition there are eleven stories, while in others there are twelve. All these stories appeared in the Strand Magazine.
The first story, “Silver Blaze” is about the disappearance of a famous race horse on the eve of an important race and on the apparent murder of its trainer. The “Adventure of the Yellow Face” is one of Doyle’s sentimental pieces. The plot of the story, “The Adventure of the Stockbroker’s Clerk” is reminiscent of that in “The Red-Headed League”, as it also involves an elaborate hoax designed to remove an inconvenient person from the scene. The story “The Adventure of the Gloria Scott” is chronologically the earliest case in Sherlock Holmes canon, and is the first case to which Holmes applied his power of deduction. “The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual” shares elements with two tales of Elgar Allan Poe, “The Gold Bug” and “The Cask of Amontillado.” The story “The Adventure of Resident Patient” is about an unusual problem brought by Dr. Percy Travelyan to Holmes. Having been a brilliant student but with small financial means, Dr. Travelyan finds himself in an unusual business arrangement. A man called Blessington has some money to invest. He sets Dr. Travelyan at a nice premises and bears all expenses. In return he demands three-fourths of the money that the doctor’s practice earns. Framed around a sea voyage from Bombay to London, the action concentrates on the human community of the ship, the Narcissus. The tensions within the small number of crew are as perilous as the weather itself, and are created by two different generations of seamen.
Captain Alistoun and the veteran Singleton have the reticence of men primarily concerned with their duties as seamen. In contrast, the detachment from the working community of the younger Donkin, a compulsive troublemaker, and James Wait, the 'nigger' of the title, comes to represent a powerful, if less practical, set of interests. During a ferocious gale Wait has to be rescued from the sickbed; and in the ensuing calm Donkin tries unsuccessfully to incite the crew to mutiny. In this Indian war of independence, Bhaskararao Bhave fought against the British rulers, especially against the Disarmament Bill and the Doctrine of Lapse introduced by Lord Dalhousie. He killed Manson, the Political Agent of South India and enraged the British Government. But his patriotic fight was nullified as much by the 'divide and rule' policy of the Britishers as by betrayal by his own people. Consequently he lost his kingdom, mother and wife and escaped. Later he was arrested and ordered to be hanged to death. But the strange quirks of his fate compelled him to escape the death-sentence as one of his loyal servants offered himself to be hanged in his place thereby cheating the British authorities. He, then wandered about in disguise, met Nanasaheb Tantya Topi in Nepal and tried in vain to defeat the British rulers. His dream of freedom was never realised. He remained a mute witness to the triumph of the British Raj until his death in Vasai near Mumbai. The book was initially intended to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history along the route, but the humorous elements took over to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages seem a distraction to the comic novel. One of the most praised things about this book is how undated it appears to modern readers--the jokes have been praised as seeming fresh and witty even today. The book is based on Jerome himself (the narrator Jerome K. Jerome) and two real-life friends, George Wingrave and Carl Hentschel with whom Jerome often took boating trips. The dog, Montmorency, is entirely fictional but, "as Jerome admits, developed out of that area of inner consciousness which, in all Englishmen, contains an element of the dog". The trip is a typical boating holiday of the time in a Thames camping skiff. This was just after commercial boat traffic on the Upper Thames had died out, replaced by the 1880s craze for boating as a leisure activity.
