It needs new\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eways of looking at old problems when the old rehearsed and received\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003estances and assumptions no longer seem to work. It needs your feeling, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eyour humor, your wit, and your sense of adventure. It needs the synthesis\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof metaphor and simile. It needs the compressed meaning that images\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003econvey, but only when they are run through the unique miracle of the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eindividual who lives and feels and remembers things in jumbled ways.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eVirginia Wolf says that the world never asks for poems, but this anthology\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eshows that the world needs your poetry, just as the world needs more free\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epeople of consciousness and compassion and its unlikely twin, humor, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eneeds their fresh eyes, needs their open ears, their impulse to build, to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emake from a spirit of play, alertness, and discipline.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe also need poetry because poetry helps us remember. The techniques\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand arcana of poetry, rhythm, rhyme, even the pauses, the caesuras, the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epunctuation, and the withheld punctuation are all in the service of the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eentertainment of memory. When we remember a poem, we remember to\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efeel, to live with our senses. We remember the rawness of feeling and the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003erelief and pleasure of play. And the voices of poets, being companionable, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ebeing good company, remind us we are not alone. These are all reasons\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003efor gratitude. Once again, thank you, poets and readers. And all readers\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof poems become poets when they read.
