In the field of \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003ereligious organization, it was the evangelical religious sect which mounted the \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eopposition to the established church denominations. By examining religious \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003edevelopments in Canada from 1760 to 1914 Professor Clark demonstrates how every move \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eon the part of established church groups to secure, by union and other means, a \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003egreater degree of order in religious organization was accompanied by the rise of new \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eforms of religious organization in those areas of society undergoing rapid \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003echange.\u003cp\u003eIn face of developments in our society today this study gains \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eparticular significance. The strong influence of the functionalist school in \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003esociology in the United States and Canada in the 1950s and early 1960s fitted the \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003emood of a society caught up in economic prosperity and ready to accept the \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003ecomfortable assumption that the troublous upheavals in economic, political, \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003ereligious, and other forms of social organization experienced in earlier decades \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003ewould never recur. As a historical sociologist, Professor Clark gives emphasis to \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003ethe importance of viewing developments in historical perspective.
