As a concept, it seeks to comprehend a new phase in the unfolding of modernity when modernity has gone global only to be fragmented into claims to \"alternative\" or \"multiple\" modernities in competition, if not at war with one another.\u003cbr\u003eThe essays engage Panglossian celebrations of phenomena associated with globalization as harbingers of a new age of cosmopolitan and egalitarian global civilization that would do away with the economic, social, and ethnic injustices of modernity, with its entanglements in colonialism-a colonial modernity with Euro\/America at its core. They argue, to the contrary, that this most recent episode of globalization not only has not eliminated earlier inequalities and divisions among peoples, it also has resurrected seemingly dormant divisions, created new ones of its own, and deepened inequalities transnationally.
