While most Indian literary scholarship has focused on the normative Hindu woman, \u003cem\u003eIntimate Relations\u003c\/em\u003e links the representation of the widow in \u003cem\u003ebhadralok\u003c\/em\u003e society with that of the courtesan of \u003cem\u003esharif\u003c\/em\u003e society in Bengali and Urdu novels from the 1880s to the 1920s.
