"Das Lehrbuch, welches der Medizin-Studierende während seiner Universitätszeit benützt, dient ihm später, wenn er als Arzt in die praktische Tätigkeit eintritt, als Ratgeber, als Nachschlagebuch. Die Absicht, das Buch auch für diesen Zweck geeignet zu machen, hat mich dazu gebracht, es ausführlicher zu gestalten. Es strebt nicht Vollständigkeit an, denn es ist nicht für Ophthalmologen von Fach bestimmt, welchen ja grössere Handbücher und Sammelwerke zu Gebote stehen. Es soll vielmehr dem praktischen Arzt in schwierigen Fällen zu Hilfe kommen. Die Aufgabe eines Lehrbuches liegt nicht darin, möglichst viel zu bringen, sondern das, was unumgänglich zu wissen nötig ist, in möglichst verständlicher Form auseinanderzusetzen. Die Veränderungen, welche diese Auflage gegen die erste aufweist, bestehen daher zum grössten Teile darin, dass ich manche Punkte klarer und fasslicher darzustellen versuchte. Zu diesem Zwecke wurde auch eine Anzahl neuer Holzschnitte beigegeben. Ich hoffe daher, dass die bescheidene Vergrö erung dieser Auflage gegen die frühere für die Studierenden nicht eine Vermehrung der Gedächtnislast, sondern im Gegenteile eine Erleichterung derselben durch besseres Verständnis bedeuten und dass sich das Buch den bisherigen Beifall der Leser bewahren wird."
