These three districts were created in 1784 as surveyors' districts for the purpose of aiding in the settlement of lands within Tennessee. The Eastern District covered from Greene County to the Cumberland Mountains which covers the counties of: Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hawkins, Jefferson, Knox, Monroe, Roane, Sevier, Sullivan, and Washington. The Middle District covered from the Cumberland Mountains to the Tennessee River which cover the counties of: Bedford, Davidson, Dickson, Franklin, Giles, Hickman, Humphreys, Jackson, Lawrence. Lincoln, Marion, Maury, Montgomery, Overton, Perry. Robertson, Smith, Sumner, Warren, Wayne, White, Williamson, and Wilson. The Western District covers between the Tennessee River and the Mississippi River which cover the counties of: Carrol, Dyer, Fayette, Gibson, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henderson, Henry, Madison, McNairy, Obion, Perry, Shelby, Tipton, and Weakley. This area was ceded to the federal government in 1790. But North Carolina continued to issue grants in until 1803. Beginning in 1806, Tennessee began issuing its own grants within its borders and continued until 1903. This book contains information from warrants, surveys, grants and other related materials from 1783 to 1803 for land in the Eastern District which includes 460 grants and 33 shucks which may or may not relate to a grant, the Middle District which includes 613 grants and 88 shucks which may or may not relate to a grant and the Western District which includes 433 grants and 7 shucks which may or may not relate to a grant.
