In Zeiten knapper werdender Ressourcen sieht sich die psychoanalytische Langzeittherapie einmal mehr mit der Behauptung konfrontiert, neurotische und psychosomatische Symptome könnten schneller, effizienter, wissenschaftlicher und billiger behandelt werden. Die Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Fragen berührt zentrale Problemstellungen der Psychoanalyse als Wissenschaft des Unbewussten, deren Gegenstand sich per definitionem der direkten Beobachtung entzieht und die - als Wissenschaft zwischen den Wissenschaften - beansprucht, eine wissenschaftliche Forschungsmethode sui generis entwickelt zu haben. In den beiden ersten Teilen des Buches stellen international renommierte Psychoanalytiker den historischen und aktuellen Kontext der Auseinandersetzungen um eine differenzierte und adäquate Katamneseforschung in der Psychoanalyse dar. Gesundheitspolitische Aspekte, aber auch Kontroversen zu Ziel- und Erfolgskriterien von Psychoanalysen innerhalb und au erhalb der psychoanalytischen Community bis hin zu konkreten Untersuchungen der Langzeitwirkungen von Behandlungen werden diskutiert. Dies trägt zum besseren Verständnis wesentlicher Zielsetzungen, charakteristischer methodischer Vorgehensweisen sowie vielschichtiger Ergebnissse abgeschlossener und noch laufender internationaler Studien in diesem Gebiet bei, die im dritten Teil des Buches vorgestellt werden. Dieses richtet sich sowohl an Psychotherapeuten und Psychoanalytiker als auch an eine breite Leserschaft.
Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber ist Professorin für Psychoanalytische Psychologie der Universität Kassel, Direktorin des Sigmund-Freud-Instituts, Lehranalytikerin der Deutschen Psychoanalytischen Vereinigung, Mitglied der Schweizer Gesellschaft für Psychoanalyse, Chair des Research Subcommittees for Conceptual Research of the International Psychoanalytical Association und Visiting professor am University College London.
