It includes everything from the first edition (revised and slightly polished) plus detailed explanations of the next twenty sonnets. You will find the same structure: difficult words with simple synonyms, plain-English line-by-line meanings, literary explanations, deep thematic analysis, and connections to earlier sonnets. I have also kept the personal commentary section that many readers told me they valued - the place where I stop being an explainer and simply respond to the poems as a reader and a lover of Shakespeare.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eForty sonnets is not the whole sequence. But it is a substantial journey. We travel from the urgency of procreation (\"From fairest creatures we desire increase\") to the first stirrings of betrayal, forgiveness, and the strange logic of love that forgives even when it should not. We watch the poet declare war on Time and then admit that poetry alone may not be enough. We see him argue that the young man's refusal to have children is a kind of self-murder - and then, in Sonnet 18, discover that his verse can give immortality after all.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI have tried to remain faithful to Shakespeare's words while making them speak clearly to a modern reader. I have not pretended to offer the only possible interpretation.
