From 1891 to 1905, the resistance movements relied on armed coalitions. These were either ethnic or inter-ethnic in nature. They brought together traditional allies, rival groups and groups with no geographical contact. From 1905 onwards, the organisation of the armed resistance was characterised primarily by internal units and by raids between insurgent groups. Throughout their resistance, the insurgent groups alternated between defensive and offensive military strategies. These strategies were sometimes adapted to the military strategy of the colonial army.
