In Garth's case, it is not a straight line, but rather takes him to work in an airplane factory in Bristol, then to the RAF where he becomes a pilot, is shot down and gets awarded the DFC while in a German prison camp, then through the length and breadth of Africa where he takes on passengers as a private pilot, and finally back to his native Trinidad where he serves as a commercial pilot in the newly-founded national airline, BWIA.
