He was born on the 11th of July, 1956, in Kolkata, and completed his schooling at The Doon School. Ghosh later continued his further studies at St. Stephen’s College and Delhi School of Economics. He also received his doctorate in social anthropology from St Edmund Hall, Oxford. In the year 2007, he was honored with the Padma Shri by the Indian Government.
