She is the author of In Extremis: The Life of Laura Riding, which was shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize. In 2007 Penguin published her book A Blue Hand: The Beats in India, a narrative account of Allen Ginsberg’s travels in India. While a Fellow at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library, she researched and wrote The Convert.
