I started calling the form an American sonet to distinguish it from its European cousins (Elizabethan or Petrarchan sonnets). The form has twelve lines: two five line stanzas and one concluding couplet. The meter is mostly iambic, though the line length varies. Some rhyme, some don't. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI keep coming back to the sonet form because of the freedom I find within the structure, and because I suspect that it allows for true poetry, or my concept of it anyway. This is not to say that any of my poems (or anyone else's, for that matter) achieve that goal.
