The third, the geography, carries the field guide around the world, tracing how the same forms take on different meanings as they cross from one culture to another. The fourth, the forces, turns to the pressures, technological, economic, and ideological, that are remaking the whole terrain in real time. A conclusion gathers what the journey has shown. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eThree commitments shape the telling. The first is that the book does not rank its specimens. A live-in arrangement in south Delhi is not set above or below a fifty-year arranged marriage in a Tamil village or a polyamorous constellation in Brooklyn; each is described as itself, and the reader is left to do the judging. The second is that every claim about how we live now is anchored, wherever possible, to a number and to a history, on the conviction that intimate life is best understood at the seam where private feeling meets public structure, and that the truth lives in the friction between the two; the reader will therefore hear, in the same paragraph, something of the couples' therapist and something of the sociologist, by design, because the subject demands both.
