Twenty-One Years in India by John Lisseter Humphreys is a reflective account of his two decades of service in British India as a colonial administrator. Drawing from personal experience, Humphreys offers insights into the workings of the British civil service, legal and political systems, and interactions with local rulers and communities. The book highlights the complexities of governance, cultural encounters, and administrative challenges faced in regions like Terengganu and Kedah. With a blend of observation and critique, Humphreys provides a valuable historical perspective on colonial policy, native administration, and the changing dynamics of British rule in early 20th-century India and Malaya.

John Lisseter Humphreys (1881–1929) was a British colonial administrator and Governor of North Borneo from 1926 until his death in 1929. Educated at Bromsgrove School and Brasenose College, Oxford, he joined the Straits Settlements Civil Service in 1905. He held various key roles, including magistrate in Singapore and Penang, British Agent and later Adviser in Terengganu (1916–1925), and Adviser in Kedah (1925–1926). In 1929, while on leave in China, he died of pneumonia and heart failure in Tientsin. Recognized for his service, he was awarded the C.B.E. in 1925 and the C.M.G. in 1928.
