Dynamics of Underdevelopment of Uttar Pradesh (Hardbound - 2013)

Underdeveloped and developing economies are the pools of back-waters, surrounding a few enclaves of development. These are the symptoms of inter-sector, inter-region, and infra-regional inequalities of development.
Traditional theory emphasized industrialization as a basic strategy of development. The Indian experience, however, shows that agricultural development of states like Punjab and Haryana enabled them to forge ahead in the race, while states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra made industrialization as the base of their relatively higher growth. But states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha remained the back waters of underdevelopment despite huge public investments in basic and heavy goods industries in the public sector. This backdrop is covered by a broader view of development and economic growth in this book which focuses on the dynamics of underdevelopment and development of Uttar Pradesh relative to the Indian economy and economies of five most developed states of India. Development is conceived broadly in terms of generation of employment, development of infrastructure, education, agriculture, and FDI as the props of growth of SDP Where as agriculture and higher education in U.P. is well developed, the state lags behind the five most developed states and also the Indian economy in most other facets of development, including growth of SDP. The thrust of development policy, including educational and other reforms and development programs are under the microscopic scanner in the book, while the potential for future growth is greatly highlighted.

Dr. Shri Prakash formerly Dean (Research) and currently Professor of Eminence at BIMTECH, holds a Ph.D. in Economics. He has served in several reputed research institutions and universities in various capacities, including the U.G.C. and NUEPA and was involved in the formulation of education policy of India as a part of think-tank of NUEPA-MHRD. He launched four monthly journals-Paripekhya-Socio-economic Perspective of Education (Hindi) and edited it till 1997. He edited Business Perspective, biannual journal of BIMTECH for a decade. He is currently on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Bulletin of Political Economy, Athens, and VARTA, Allahabad. He acts as a referee of papers of several journals, including Economic Modeling (Elsevier, U.S.) He has authored nine books, including two edited ones. He has published nearly 220 research papers of which nearly 200 are available in virtual library of Spain and Germany.
Dr. H. Chaturvedi, Ph.D. has more than three decades of experience in teaching, research and administration. He has been involved in the formulation of policies, planning, regulation and control of Management and other disciplines of technical education. He has contributed especially in applications of quality concepts in management education.
Under his leadership, BIMTECH has grown by leaps and bounds since 1999. He linked BIMTECH with 20 B'Schools of the USA, Canada, UK, France, Poland, Austria, Hungary and Tanzania. Because of its multifaceted growth, the institute has been consistently ranked among the top 15 business schools in the country by reputed magazines like Business Today, Outlook and The Telegraph. BIMTECH setup a state private university under his leadership at Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, which will start its programs from July 2012
He was Editor-in-Chief of four reputed refereed journals-Business Perspectives, Journal of Insurance b Risk Management, South Asian Business Review, and Indian Retail Review. He is a member of governing bodies of several institutions of higher learning across the country, including AIMA.
