These books have exercised a deep Influence on the civilizations of the continent of Asia. East was the first to discover the Eternal Truth and bring it to the knowledge of the world. The Sacred Books are widely quoted in works on religion and philosophy. The books in this series are indispensable for a comparative study of the religions of the East. These contain some of the ancient sayings which were preserved because they are so true and so striking that they could not be for-gotten. The Sacred Books contain most valuable information, not only on the religion but also on moral sentiments, the social institutions, and the legal maxims of some of the most important nations of antiquity. These books would be found of great interest and use not only to the scholars of religion and philosophy and ancient history but also to the common man interested in these subjects.
