Alice Munro, one of the greatest short story writers of all times, has through her inexplicable art of storytelling added new dimensions to the short story as a literary genre. Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013, her forte as an artist lies in her exceptional ability of capturing life in all its veracity and vitality in all her works. While her art of narration is at once lucid, it has been rendered unique by subtle nuances and sudden twists with the progression of the narrative. This has added to her immense popularity and worldwide recognition of her fiction. Dear Life, till date Munro’s latest collection of short stories, is a masterpiece which exemplifies the artist’s gift of storytelling. Written from a philosophical perspective, the stories reveal Munro’s in-depth study and revelations on life, as the artist has traversed through its long alleys and garnered wide experiences. In this inimitable fiction Munro studies exhaustively the mysterious workings of human mind and explores minutely the intricacies of individual relationship, which the author had reaped from her close observation of her own life. The book is an attempt to study this ‘Nobel Prize’ winning author from new grounds, as well as search out the author’s disclosures on the hidden truths of human existence. It also attempts to focus on the voice of women—subdued, humiliated, and disregarded by patriarchal social constructs, but at the same time making them heard against the traditional male oriented social system. Having journeyed through the long pathways of life, Munro in this collection unwinds the treasures of her heart, as a woman to her innumerable readers across the globe. Since Munro has now stepped onto the ‘twilight’ of her age and is recounting the gone-by days which had shaped her into the ‘artist-woman’ that she is now, the work has been named The Twilight Shades: A Study of Dear Life by Alice Munro.
