The course of Maratha history in its last phase is marked by contingencies, some of greater import than others. Against the weakening authority of Peshwa Bajirao II and Shinde, Holkar and Bhonsle stands the rising power of Hastings. Fall of the Maratha Empire, 1807–1818 (Volume II) documents the history of the Marathas and their subsequent decline during the period 1807–18, when the Peshwa was reduced to spending his days at Bithur near Kanpur as a pensioner of the British. The Pindari hordes that deluged the major part of India were exterminated by Lord Hastings followed by the consolidation of British hegemony over the Marathas, spearheaded by Elphinstone.

Sailendra Nath Sen is a former Professor of History, University of Calcutta, an Honorary Professor of History there since 2005, and a Fellow, Asiatic Society. He has produced pioneering works on the history of the Marathas including Anglo-Maratha Relations during the Administration of Warren Hastings, 1772–1785 (1961, repr. 1994) and Anglo-Maratha Relations, 1785–1796 (1974, repr. 1994). Some of Professor Sen's other publications are Ancient Indian History and Civilization (2nd edn. 1999); History of the Freedom Movement in India (1998); A Textbook of Medieval Indian History (2013); An Advanced History of Modern India (2017) and Textbook of Indian History and Culture (2018).
