In this study an attempt has been made to determine, on the basis of Lord Mountbatten's own Papers, his inner thinking about Pakistan as reflected in his general agreement with the Congress leaders' viewpoint about plans for the independence of India, his arguments before the Muslim League leaders that it was in the interests of the Muslims themselves that the country should not be partitioned, his telling Jawaharlal Nehru that if a "truncated" Pakistan was allowed to come into being at an early date he was sure that such a Pakistan was bound to ask for merger with residuary India, his advancing the date of the transfer of power several times, admitting at the same time that early transfer of power would suit residuary India but would create serious problems for Pakistan, his and/or his aides' role in the demarcation of the final boundaries of Pakistan,

The author did his M.A. from the University of Delhi and was a Research Fellow during 1954-55 at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He has been interested in research since 1944 when he compiled and edited Speeches and Statements of Iqbal which was published under his pseudonym "Shamloo". Since then he has written/edited eight books. His articles have been published in leading journals in different parts of the world, such as Asian Survey, Civilisations, Eastern World, Europa Archiv, MATO's Fifteen Nations, Pacific Affairs, and Pakistan Horizon. He has also contributed a chapter each to Foreign Policy of Pakistan, A History of the Freedom Movement, Mohamed Ali, Pakistan and Regional Security, The Role of Middle Powers in World Politics, Social Sciences in Asia, Studies on Commonwealth of Muslim States, Unity and Contradiction : Major Aspects of Sino-Soviet Relations and World Scholars on Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
The author has attended international conferences of scholars held at Geneva (1950 and 1952), Cambridge, USA (1952), Milan (1954), Tokyo (1960), Athens (1962), Lahore (1963, 1977 and 1983), Amsterdam (1965), Islamabad (1970 and 1976), Washington (1971), Jakarta (1974) and Teheran (1976).
