The town Sirsa is one of the historically prominent ancient towns of North India. It has also been strategically and commercially important throughout history. It has enjoyed the status of the Divisional Headquarters during the Yaudheya Republic and the Pratihar rule and also the District Headquarters from 1838 to 1884 A.D. It was again declared as the District Headquarters on September 1, 1975. The people of the town played a significant role during the uprising of 1857 and the movements and programmes launched by the Khilafat Committee, the Congress, the Nau-Jawan Bharat Sabha, the Congress Socialist Party, the Radical Party, the Arya Samaj and the Sanatan Dharma Sabha. The town made its contribution also in Beopari Satyagraha, the tenancy agitation and the chaprasi-ardali agitation. Besides it, the town was frequently visited by the eminent personalities of the day including Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, C. Rajgopalachari, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Sarojini Naidu, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Prof. Tarkunde, Aruna Asaf Ali and Desh Bandhu Gupta. The present volume deals with different aspects of the history of the town and highlights 40 distinguished figures of the area.

Jugal Kishore Gupta (b. 1941 at Sri Ganganagar) obtained his Master’s degrees in History and Political Science from the University of Rajas-than. He was subsequently awarded the Ph.D. in Social Sciences in 1978. He has one research book ‘Sawai Jai Singh’ and nine research papers published to his credit. His articles often appear in different papers and periodicals. At present, he is Lecturer in the Department of History at Pt. J.L. Nehru Government College, Faridabad.
