Each volume features a critical analysis and reevaluation of the work of four key playwrights from that decade authored by a team of experts, together with an extensive commentary on the period .

Modern British Playwriting: The 1950s provides an authoritative and stimulating reassessment of the theatre of the decade together with a detailed study of the work of T.S Eliot (by Sarah Bay-Cheng), Terence Rattigan (David Pattie), John Osborne (Luc Gilleman) and Arnold Wesker (John Bull). The volume sets the context by providing a chronological survey of the 1950s, a period when Britain was changing rapidly and the very fabric of an apparently stable society seemed to be under threat. It explores the crisis in the theatrical climate and activity in the first part of the decade and the shift as the theatre began to document the unease in society, before documenting the early life of the four principal playwrights studied in the volume.

Four scholars provide detailed examinations of the playwrights' work during the decade, combining an analysis of their plays with a study of other material such as early play drafts, interviews and the critical receptions of the time. An Afterword reviews what the writers went on to do and provides a summary evaluation of their contribution to British theatre from the perspective of the twenty-first century.

Bay-Cheng, Sarah: - Sarah Bay-Cheng is associate professor of theatre and director of graduate studies in the Department of Theatre & Dance, University at Buffalo, USA.

Boon, Richard: - Richard Boon is Emeritus Professor of Drama, the University of Hull, UK.

Bull, John: - John Bull is the University of Reading, UK, and Professor of Drama at the University of Lincoln, UK. His many publications include Stage Right: Crisis and Recovery in British Contemporary Mainstream Theatre (1994). Recently, he was Associate Editor for Modern Drama on the New Oxford Companion to English Literature, and editor of the three volume series, British and Irish Playwrights Since World War II.

Gilleman, Luc: - Luc Gilleman was professor of English at Smith College, Massachusetts, USA.

Pattie, David: - David Pattie is Associate Professor in Drama and Theatre Arts at the University of Birmingham, UK. He researches and publishes in a number of areas; popular music performance and culture, contemporary British and Scottish theatre, and the work of Samuel Beckett. He is the author of Rock Music in Performance (Bloomsbury, 2007), and the co-editor of the books Kraftwerk: Music Non Stop (Bloomsbury, 2011) and Brian Eno: Oblique Music (Bloomsbury, 2016), and The Velvet Underground (Bloomsbury, 2022).

Roberts, Philip: - Philip Roberts is Emeritus Professor in the School of English of the University of Leeds, UK, where until 2004 he was Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies and Director of the Workshop Theatre.
