About The Book

No discourse of modern criticism can ever be complete without discussing I.A. Richards whose influence combined with those of T.S. Eliot and F.R. Leavis paved the way for the development of New Criticism. The present work stems from the need to offer an objective interpretation of Richards’s writings. In the context of widespread misinterpretations of Richards’s point of view the author has tried to trace the essential continuity between Richards’s early and later writings and present them in proper perspective. The book is divided into eleven chapters. Each chapter deals with various aspects of Richards’s theory of criticism and provides the readers an insight into them. The distinction of this book lies in the fact that it presents a perspective study of I.A. Richards’s theory of poetry. While unfolding the subtle, suggestive and consistent nature of Richards’s writings, the book discusses the underlying thread of continuity between I.A. Richards’s Theory of Poetry and New Criticism. The book will be found highly useful by the students and teachers of English literature and researchers in this field, particularly those interested in the study of New Criticism.

About The Author

Ashok Kumar, a university topper graduate from R.D.S. College, Muzaffarpur (Bihar University), obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Bihar University, Muzaffarpur. He has been teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in the T.M. Bhagalpur University for the last five years. Dr. Kumar has attended several national seminars and has contributed papers in different literary journals of great repute. Presently he is engaged in the study of Indian writings in English.
