Studies in Literature presents challenging ideas on a variety of literary topics including the poetry of T.S. Eliot. In “Indian Response to T.S. Eliot: Potentialities and Directions”, the fashionable influence-approach is subjected to a close scrutiny; “T.S. Eliot’s Poetry: the Language of Pathos” seeks to explain Eliots’ appeal on the basis of his moving arousal of karuna rasa. Some of the other topics dealt with are Dissociation of Sensibility, Crisis in Milton’s Paradise Lost, the Poetry of Hopkins, Discourse Structure in the Death of Ivan Ilyich and War Poetry. Everywhere the author’s power of close analysis of theme and form is in evidence.
