About The Book

Postcards from the Tow Path provides a fascinating glimpse into a time when American canals were the backbone of commercial transportation for the country's expansion. Using the humble postcard, the author offers the reader a peek into life on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal during the last 30 years of its operation. The three-volume set examines the canal's fierce competition with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, its temperamental neighbor - the Potomac River, and the cities and towns located along its 185-mile route between Washington, D. C. and Cumberland, Maryland. Moments frozen in time and preserved on fragile, vintage postcards are thoughtfully shared in this series. These artifacts have survived the hazards of long-term storage - floods, fires, mildew, decaying adhesives and one-way trips to landfills - to bring a bygone era back into focus. The journey begins with Volume One, which contains over 260 historic images from Washington, D. C., Rock Creek Park, Glen Echo Park, Great Falls and Brunswick, Maryland. Clara Barton, the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival, Georgetown University and Cabin John Bridge are also featured using the richness of quaint picture postcards. In addition, the author provides a brief history of the styles and types of postcards sold in the United States, starting with their authorized use in 1872.
