Der Band behandelt Aspekte der Denkmalpflege im östlichen Mitteleuropa, die aus der besonderen historischen und gesellschaftspolitischen Situation im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert resultieren. In den multiethnisch geprägten Regionen, die bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg von den drei Gro mächten Ru land, Österreich und Preu en dominiert wurden, gewannen national konnotierte Baudenkmäler eine eminente Bedeutung im Streben nach staatlicher Unabhängigkeit. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entstand in Polen eine eigene Schule des rekonstruierenden Wiederaufbaus; gleichzeitig waren in allen Ländern des Ostblocks Zeugnisse der Feudalkultur von Zerstörung bedroht. Der politische Umbruch des Jahres 1989 führte zu einer Wiederentdeckung der Geschichte, die jedoch, wie die Schlo debatten in Bratislava (Pre burg) und Berlin zeigen, nicht zwingend einhergeht mit einem Bewu tsein für die historische Authentizität des Baudenkmals.
