This new publication about the multi-faceted history of this continually-expanding residence is accompanied by investigations into how members of the Habsburg dynasty practiced of self-representation by examining the architecture of the Hofburg and its decorative forms, the close connection between ceremonial and spatial structures, as well as the architectural and functional importance of theaters, garden complexes, and art collections. Connections to contemporary European developments serve as a persistent lens through which one can view the history of the Hofburg. The internationality of the Habsburg family is a notable motif in the time period under examination in this volume. Im gegebenen Zeitraum ist die Internationalitat der Familie Habsburg eine besonders zu berucksichtigende Voraussetzung. Der nachweisbar enge Kontakt und der regelmassige Austausch zwischen den habsburgischen Hofen in Wien, Madrid und Brussel sind gerade fur die Analyse und Bewertung der bau- und raumkunstlerischen Leistungen an der Wiener Hofburg von grundlegender Bedeutung. Die Hofburg war mit ihren standig wechselnden Baustellen ein stellvertretender und reprasentativer Untersuchungsraum fur das internationale, vornehmlich aber italienisch gepragte Baugeschehen in Mitteleuropa.
