About The Book

Mitte der 1920er Jahre begann die junge Kunsthandwerkerin Else Stadler-Jacobs aus Pasing bei M�nchen mit textilen Materialien zu experimentieren. Besonders Bast faszinierte sie - ein damals im Kunsthandwerk kaum genutztes Material. Mit viel Geschick und einem au ergew�hnlichen Gesp�r f�r Formen und Farben entwarf sie dekorative Tierfiguren, die bald internationalen Anklang fanden. Bereits 1930 belieferten ihre Modelle renommierte Kaufh�user in Chicago, San Francisco, London und Budapest.

Um die wachsende Nachfrage zu bedienen, besch�ftigte Stadler-Jacobs zahlreiche Frauen, die ihre kunstvollen Tiere in Heimarbeit fertigten. In den Wirtschaftswunderjahren erlebte ihre Manufaktur einen regelrechten Boom und bot bis zu 50 Frauen Arbeit. �ber Jahrzehnte hinweg schuf sie mehr als 100 Tierarten - von heimischen Waldbewohnern bis hin zu exotischen Kreaturen.

Fast w�re ihr beeindruckendes Lebenswerk in Vergessenheit geraten. Doch 50 Jahre nach dem Ende ihrer Produktion wurde es auf einem Dachboden in M�nchen wiederentdeckt. Daniel Karrasch und Christoph Sauter haben sich auf Spurensuche begeben: Sie erz�hlen die bewegende k�nstlerische und wirtschaftliche Erfolgsgeschichte dieser au ergew�hnlichen Frau, beleuchten ihre k�nstlerischen Wurzeln im M�nchen der Zeit nach 1900 und rekonstruieren den aufwendigen Herstellungsprozess ihrer Basttiere. Ein reich bebilderter Katalogteil, erg�nzt durch historische Aufnahmen, bringt die fantasievolle Welt der "Bastowerkstatt" zur�ck ans Licht.

About The Author

Daniel Karrasch und Christoph Sauter forschten gemeinsam über das Münchner "Fotoatelier Elvira", insbesondere über die Augsburger Filiale und deren bis dahin noch kaum gewürdigte Geschäftsführerin Mathilde Goudstikker. Die Ausstellung in den Kunstsammlungen & Museen Augsburg sowie die Veröffentlichung der Forschungsarbeit in Die modernen Frauen des Atelier Elvira folgten 2022. Die wiederentdeckte Geschichte der Münchener Kunsthandwerkerin Else Stadler-Jacobs und ihrer Bastowerkstatt zeigten sie erstmalig 2024 in der Ausstellung "Tiere im tim" im Staatlichen Textil- und Industriemuseum Augsburg (tim). Zur Folgeausstellung "Tiere im Museum" im Deutschen Hutmuseum Lindenberg erscheint dieser Katalog.

Christoph Sauter arbeitet seit 2005 als diplomierter Kommunikationsdesigner mit dem Schwerpunkt Ausstellungsgestaltung.
