Le portrait est sans conteste le genre artistique le plus f�cond du d�but des Temps modernes. Dans la France du XVIIe si�cle, qui se distingue par une mobilit� sociale inconnue jusqu'alors, le portrait permet pr�cis�ment d'appuyer la revendication d'un nouveau statut social ou d'assurer un rang acquis, mais d�sormais remis en question. Le portrait se fait �galement l'�cho de la discussion capitale concernant le rapport entre le corps et l'�me. Pourtant, les sources �crites parvenues jusqu'� nous, qui s'int�ressent au portrait, sont �tonnamment parcimonieuses. L'Acad�mie royale de peinture et de sculpture fond�e en 1648, en particulier, est presque totalement muette � ce sujet. Et ce, bien que nombre de ses membres gagnent leur vie comme portraitistes et que le genre voie son importance s'accro�tre au cours du Grand Si�cle: les portraits se multiplient, tandis que leur prix augmente constamment. Il semble que l'Acad�mie ait sciemment pass� sous silence le portrait et les d�bats aff�rents, afin de mieux c�l�brer comme sa v�ritable mission la peinture d'histoire, sur laquelle l'institution nous a laiss� d'innombrables t�moignages. La pr�sente �tude reconstitue les discours autour du portrait dans la France du XVIIe si�cle et d�voile une discussion d'une vivacit� surprenante, o� d'aucuns se sont m�me demand� si le portrait ne m�ritait pas - plut�t que la peinture d'histoire - d'occuper la premi�re place dans la hi�rarchie des genres.
