Das Allgemeine K nstlerlexikon (AKL) ist Nachfolger der traditionsreichen kunsthistorischen Standardwerke Thieme-Becker und Vollmer und erscheint seit 1991. Selbst l ngst ein Standardwerk, beschr nkt es sich bewusst nicht auf die gro en Meister: bildende K nstler aus aller Welt und aus allen Zeiten, von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart, werden aufgenommen. Enthalten sind nicht nur Maler, Bildhauer oder Graphiker, sondern auch Architekten, Designer, Fotografen, Schriftk nstler, Kunsthandwerker u.v.m. Rund 1.500 K nstlerbiographien werden f r jeden Band zusammengestellt. Nach jeweils zehn B nden erscheint ein Register nach L ndern und k nstlerischen Berufen.

Mit dem aktualisierten Editionsplan wird die Printausgabe im Jahr 2022 abgeschlossen. Daf r wird der Anteil von Artikeln verst rkt, die nur online erscheinen.

Die ersten B nde des AKL wurden bereits ab 1969 bearbeitet, dieser Zeitraum von fast vier Jahrzehnten wird nun in Nachtr gen aufgearbeitet. Nachtragsband I, der die Nachtragsartikel zum Buchstaben A enth lt, ist 2005 erschienen. 2012 erschien der f nfte Nachtragsband (Cassini - Czwartos).

Jeder Artikel bietet in bersichtlicher Gliederung:

  • den Namen und alle bekannten Namennebenformen. Pseudonyme, M dchennamen oder bisher irrt mlich zugeordnete Namen werden entschl sselt, Verweisungen auf den Haupteintrag jeweils eingef gt.
  • die Lebensdaten mit einer Werk- und Schaffenscharakteristik.
  • Informationen zum Einfluss der K nstlerin/des K nstlers auf das jeweilige kulturelle Umfeld
  • eine Auswahl der Werke mit ihren Standorten
  • eine Auswahl der Ausstellungen
  • ausf hrliche Hinweise auf Selbstzeugnisse und Schriften der K nstlerin/des K nstlers
  • eine umfassende Bibliographie. Auch auf Eintr ge in anderen Nachschlagewerken, ungedrucktes Quellenmaterial und Kataloge wird hingewiesen.
  • Die Signatur am Ende eines jeden Artikels verweist auf den jeweiligen Verfasser oder Redakteur.
