Ukiyo-e ("Bilder der flie enden Welt") ist die Bezeichnung f�r eine in der glanzvollen Edo-�ra (1605-1868) entstandene japanische Kunstbewegung. Der diesen Drucken verliehene hedonistische Name war als ein ironischer Kontrast zu der buddhistischen Astralebene der "leidenden Welt" gemeint. Es handelt sich bei diesen Drucken jeweils um das kollektive Werk eines Malers, eines Stechers und eines Druckers, auch wenn diese Kunstwerke gemeinhin vor allem den Malern und gelegentlich auch den Druckern zugeschrieben werden. Die Drucke des Ukiyo-e wurden erst durch ihre geringen Kosten infolge des technischen Fortschritts der Druckkunst erm�glicht. Sie zeigten Szenen aus dem Alltagsleben und stellten Bijin ("sch�ne Frauen"), Kabuki-Schauspieler und sogar Sumoringer dar. Sp�ter wurden Landschaften zu beliebten Motiven des Ukiyo-e. Der Begr�nder der Bewegung, Moronobu, und K�nstler wie Hokusai, Hiroshige, Utamaro und Sharaku z�hlen zu den ber�hmtesten Vertretern dieser Kunstgattung. Japan �ffnete sich im Jahr 1868 dem Westen. Die meisterliche Technik, die Zartheit der Bilder und die grafische Pr�zision des Ukiyo-e nahmen den Westen sofort gefangen und �bten gro en Einfluss auf K�nstler wie Klimt, van Gogh und die Impressionisten aus. Die europ�ische Kunst dieser gesamten Epoche war von Japan geradezu fasziniert. Die Autoren Dora Amsden, Woldemar von Seidlitz und Friedrich H. Spiegelberg unterstreichen in ihrer Analyse implizit den gro en Einfluss dieser Bewegung auf die gesamte westliche Kunst der damaligen Zeit. Die gro artigen Drucke des Ukiyo-e spiegeln die Entstehung des Ideals der weiblichen Sch�nheit, vor allem des weiblichen Gesichts, ebenso wie die Wandlungen unterworfene Rolle der G�tter und die Bedeutung der Landschaft, vor allem bei dem von den Impressionisten hoch gesch�tzten Hiroshige, wider. Auf diese Weise verk�rpern die Drucke des Ukiyo-e ein unbezahlbares Zeugnis f�r die vollst�ndige Entwicklung einer Gesellschaft.
