Applied linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of study that identifies, investigates and provides solutions to language-related real-life problems. As a branch of linguistics it is concerned with practical applications of language studies, with particular focus on the communicative function of language. The main academic fields related to applied linguistics include education and linguistics, while bilingualism, conversation analysis, contrastive linguistics, language pedagogy, translation, etc. are its major branches. Applied Linguistics: Stylistics, Language Teaching, Translation, and Neurogrammar explores in depth some of the most vital areas in stylistics and language teaching: ‘Anthropomorphism in the Language of Poetry’; style as a weapon or defence mechanism in ‘Style as Artiface’; a new approach to technical style in ‘Technical style: Implications of Operationalism’; discourse structure and teaching of English Conversation in ‘Dialogue and Dialogue Teaching’; a scientific procedure for the teaching of poetry at the university level in ‘Analyzing a Poem: A Linguistic Pedagogical Approach’ and ‘Teaching Poetry: A Linguistic Method’. In this edition, besides Introduction to applied linguistics, new and emerging topics—‘Modern Trends in Lexicography’, ‘The Question of Equivalence in Translation’, and ‘Neurogrammar’—have been added. Nearly all the articles are analytical and thought provoking; the author has avoided repeating familiar views and ideas and has sought to be precise and pithy in order to include all the pertinent topics on the subject in the book. An attempt has been made to keep the book scholarly, but at the same time make it student-friendly. It shall be highly useful to students, researchers and teachers of applied linguistics.

R.S. Sharma has taught English literature for more than thirty years. He was Professor of English at Banaras Hindu University. He holds specialization in Modern English literature, stylistics, and technical writing. His research papers in these areas have found place in Indian and foreign journals. His publications include Technical Writing, Linguistic Aspects of Contemporary English Poetry, Studies in Literature, Indian Response to T.S. Eliot (ed.), and Wuthering Heights: A Commentary. Professor Sharma’s recent publications are Linguistic Aspects of English Poetry (2009) and Technical Writing and Communication (2010). He has also delivered lectures on ‘Western Postmodern Theories and Indian Poetics’, ‘Postmodern Literary Theories’ and ‘Recent Developments in Feminism’.
