About The Book

Sixteen critical essays that constitute this Volume shed new light on some of the excellent literary works in English produced in different parts of the world: England, America, Canada, Africa and India. The authors discussed are: Marlowe, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Browning, Russell and Golding; Hemingway, Roethke, and Updike; Michael Ondaatje; Chinua Achebe; David Davidar. There are also two perceptive critical essays—one on the American poetry since 1950 and the other on the impact of science and technology on English poetry. It is always an intellectual pleasure to see an old author or an old text in a new light as it is a great joy to discover suddenly a realm of gold in a new literary work. The essays thus offer an experience of suddenly being transported to a different world altogether accompanied by an aesthetic relish of discovering a familiar world in an unfamiliar fashion. Since most of the authors, discussed, are prescribed in syllabi of various Indian Universities both the teachers and the students of English literature will certainly find them extremely useful, and anybody interested in literature in English is also bound to be pleasantly surprised by the richness and variety of aesthetic experience and intellectual delight promised by these luminous essays.

About The Author

Mohit K. Ray, a full Professor since 1982, is one of the senior most Professors of English in the country. He has three books and a large number of research papers published in scholarly journals in India and abroad, which reflect his wide range of scholarship including Criticism, Comparative Literature, New Literatures, Canonical Literature, Comparative Poetics and Translation Studies. Professor Ray has attended and chaired sessions as an invited participant in many international Conferences, Seminars, and Colloquia held in different parts of the globe—England, France, Portugal, Austria, Finland, Estonia, America, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, etc. Professor Ray has studied several languages including Latin, Sanskrit, Arabic, French and German. He has edited several anthologies of critical studies, and edits The Atlantic Critical Review, an international quarterly of global circulation. Professor Ray is a distinguished member of many international bodies including Association Internationale de Littérature Comparée, Paris, and Association Internationale des Critiques Littéraires Paris.
