Sir James Emerson Tennent, 1st Baronet FRS (1804-69), born James Emerson in Ireland but who later adopted the name of his wife in addition to his own by royal licence, was a British politician and traveller. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin he took up the cause of Greek independence and travelled in Greece, publishing three books on the subject between 1826-30. He was called to the bar in 1831 and entered parliament the following year as member for Belfast. In 1845 he was knighted and appointed colonial secretary in Ceylon where he remained until 1850, and again he published several works relating to his experiences in the country. This title was first published in 1867 and includes several illustrations.
