Scripture Plain & Simple is an innovative-yet accurate-adaptation of select passages from the Greek New Testament, challenging contemporary readers with the person and teaching of Jesus. An adaptation differs from a translation in that it imports and integrates imagery foreign to the biblical culture, while remaining faithful to the meaning of the biblical text.
Dr. Barclay M. Newman was Chair and Chief Translator of the Contemporary English Version (CEV) of the Bible, first published in 1995 by the American Bible Society, then in 2006 by G.P. Putnam's Sons (Penguin Books) as Seek Find: The Bible for All People. He was a member of the Old Testament Committee for the Good News Bible, (Today's English Version) published in 1976 by the American Bible Society (ABS), and chaired the revision that was published by the (ABS) in 1992 as the Good News Translation (GNT). In 1974, Newman was invited to establish a Department of Translation at the University of Malaysia, where he also lectured in both English and Malay for two years. At the request of the Malaysian Ministry of Education, he translated from Malay into English a novel, several books of poetry, and a collection of short stories, all of which reflected Islamic perspectives and culture. He has written extensively on issues of translation, both religious and secular, including A Concise Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testament (first published in 1971-revised and expanded in 2010). He has co-authored translator's handbooks on Judges, Matthew, John, Acts, Romans, and Jeremiah; as well as producing almost one hundred articles on various subjects. His Running Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testament was published in 2010 by the German Bible Society (DBG) in conjunction with the latest edition of the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament. Dr. Newman's hobby is writing serious satire, semi-poetry, and other sensible and non-sensible stuff. In 2006 the National Liberty Museum (Philadelphia) in conjunction with the Satell Foundation and the Interfaith Institute named him the "International Interfaith Person of the Year".
