Following an internship, Dudley served for two years as a staff scientist at the highly respected think tank that is MIT's Neurosciences Research Program. His final academic position was as a psychiatry instructor at Tufts New England School of Medicine in Boston, giving him an opportunity to study the mind-body aspects of cancer. Dudley then entered private practice, first in mind-body medicine and then later as a family practitioner.
More than a decade after his retirement in 1999, Dudley currently lives in the mountains of New Hampshire with his wife, Jean. He spends his days writing, skiing, running, and spending time with his family, including three children and eight grandchildren.
