In 2019, Irene Genelin and her family sold their organic farm in Minnesota to pursue a life of international slow travel, weaving self-directed learning and community into their daily rhythm. In this debut collection, Irene captures the transformative journey of 2024-a year of peregrinations stretching from the red rocks of Arizona to the vibrant street markets of Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, and Singapore, before returning to the heartland of Iowa and Minnesota, and finally venturing onward to the ancient landscapes of Italy and Egypt.

Rooted in a deep sense of curiosity, Irene's writing elevates the small, intentional moments that define a life in motion. Through her lens, a shared meal becomes a lesson in culture, and a chance conversation across borders becomes a bridge to a wider world. As a worldschooling parent and lifelong unicyclist, Irene reflects on the challenges and joys of raising a child while navigating the globe, offering a grounded perspective on how travel can deeply connect us to ourselves and the people we meet along the way.

Chasing the Red Dot is more than a travelogue; it is an invitation to slow down, look closer, and find belonging in the most unexpected places.

Genelin, Irene R.: - Irene Genelin is a writer, worldschooling parent, unicyclist, Ayurveda enthusiast, home chef, and slow traveler who documents her family's everyday life on the road. She began unicycling at age 11 and traveled the world with her husband, Andy, to attend competitions and take part in long-distance unicycling tours. While unicycle touring, she learned to say "excuse me" in many different languages, her favorite being the German "Entschuldigung, bitte." In 2019, they sold their organic fruit farm in Minnesota, where Irene had learned to refinish hardwood floors, keep bees, host wood-fired oven-building workshops, raise animals for meat, and make unusual vegetables taste good by cooking and infusing them with love. Afterward, they began traveling internationally, weaving learning, movement, and community into their daily lives.Irene's writing grew out of a desire to stay connected while traveling and to share what she was learning about parenting, place, culture, and living with intention. What began as short reflections shared online gradually became a steady writing practice rooted in observation and curiosity. Her work highlights small moments: shared meals, long journeys, chance conversations, and the rhythms of family life across cultures. She is interested in self-directed learning, worldschooling, mindfulness, and how travel can deepen connections to others and the wider world. This book is her first self-published work.
