Aus Algerien vertrieben, nach Frankreich gebracht, in Toulon, Pau und Amboise festgehalten, erlebt Abdelkader die �u ere Entmachtung als Beginn einer inneren Verwandlung. Er verliert Land, Armee und politische Macht - doch er entdeckt eine Freiheit, die keine Mauer einsperren kann.

Von Amboise bis Bursa, von Damaskus bis Mekka, von Ḥirāʾ bis Dommar folgt der Roman dem zweiten Leben des Emirs: dem spirituellen Weg eines Mannes, der lernt, die Niederlage in eine Schule des Herzens zu verwandeln.

In Damaskus erreicht diese innere Gr� e ihren h�chsten Ausdruck. W�hrend der Massaker von 1860 �ffnet Abdelkader sein Haus f�r bedrohte Christen.
