Der Seerosenteich gibt uns Einblick in das Leben von Mai-ping, einem chinesischen Mädchen vom Lande, in ihre ersten schmerzvollen Liebeserfahrungen und ihre anfängliche idealistische Haltung gegenüber dem maoistischen Regime in China. Je reifer und erfahrener Mai-ping wird, wird sie sich der fatalen Einflüsse dieses Regimes auf ihre Umwelt und sich selbst bewusst.Auf Grund ihrer Intelligenz und Herkunft aus einer armen Familie vom Lande kann sie ihrenTraum verwirklichen und auf die Universität gehen, da die maoistische Politik die armen Schichten der Landbevölkerung bevorzugt behandelt. Zu ihrer Überraschung muss sie jedoch erleben, wie die städtische Hochnäsigkeit und die gegenseitige Bespitzelung unter den Studenten ihr auferlegen, ihre wahren Gedanken vor den Kommilitonen zu verbergen. Unter diesem Vorzeichen steht auch ihre Liebe zu Dan, einem Kommilitonen, der wegen seiner offenen Kritik dem Regime gegenüber in ein Arbeitslager geschickt wird.In ihrem Dorf lernt Mai-ping, dass alle andere mehr Wert hat als Leben und Gefühle von Mädchen und Frauen. Selbstmorde von Frauen und jungen Mädchen, sogar ihre beste Freundin ist darunter, erschüttern sie zutiefst. Mai-ping hat die Kulturrevolution als ein Mitglied der Kommunistischen Partei überlebt, ein Mitglied, das sich allerdings der Notwendigkeit dessen bewusst wird, au erhalb dieses Systems zu leben, um das Innenleben intakt zu halten. Beispielhaft zeigt dieses autobiographische Buch, wie die maoistische Politik die Menschen in Rotchina bis in die kleinsten Einzelheiten ihres Lebens beeinflusst und versucht, sie in den Sumpf hinabzuziehen. Wie die Blütenblätter der Seerose entwickeln sich die einzelnen Geschichten der Seerose, die erhaben über dem schlammigen Boden im Seerosenteich aufblüht.
