Fue la quinta de seis hermanos, si bien la familia se vería mermada por la muerte en 1821 de su madre, que contaba 38 años, y la de sus dos hermanas mayores en 1825, María de 11 años y Elizabeth de 10, aquejadas por tuberculosis, enfermedad contraída en la Escuela Cowan Brigde, condado de Lancashire, dirigida principalmente a hijas del clero de clase media, donde fueron enviadas en 1824 junto a Charlotte y Emily. Debido a las condiciones pésimas del internado, la familia decidió sacarlas del centro y su educación recayó en su padre, un hombre excéntrico, y en su tía materna, Elizabeth Branwell. La sombra de la muerte les dejará una huella profunda e influirá en su quehacer creativo. Tal vez para sobrellevar la pérdida de su madre y de sus hermanas, y al encontrarse liberadas de la presión del funesto colegio, Charlotte y Emily, junto a Anne y su hermano Patrick Branwell Brontë, desarrollaron una imaginación desbordante, cuyo resultado quedaría plasmado en el conjunto de poemas e historias que escribieron y que serían el inicio de una carrera que, tanto colectiva como individualmente, les ha posicionado en los pedestales de los escritores más célebres de la historia de la literatura inglesa. Precoces en su creación literaria, sus personalidades estuvieron condicionadas por el ambiente familiar en torno a la casa parroquial de Haworth (pueblo situado en el condado inglés de West Yorkshire) de la que su padre era vicario, y donde sin duda contribuyó la educación impartida por este y por su tía, quienes les abrieron las puertas al mundo de los libros y les permitieron que su afición por la escritura se convirtiera en el centro de sus intereses, al principio como un juego, como un divertimento literario que les llevó a inventar un mundo de ficción formado por los países imaginarios de Angria, Goldal y Glass Town, escenarios de sus primeras historias de ficción.
