For millions of people, religion is the mainstay of their lives, providing them with help and support and giving meaning to existence. But what happens if their faith deserts them?

FAITH - THE SHATTERED DREAM is told in two parts. Part One is a biography of Reg Atkinson, a devout and faithful believer, whose sole ambition is to become a priest and serve God. When he is expelled from his seminary for a minor transgression, Reg's hopes are dashed; he loses his ability to believe blindly and the more closely he looks at the Church, the more cracks he finds. His story is a harrowing one, both emotionally and spiritually, for despite the fact that he is able to disprove the Church's claim of infallibility, he can never truly dispel the fear that it has instilled in him. A dread of death and eternal damnation is the legacy of a belief which he carries with him to this day.

Part Two of the book is written by Reg himself. In it he poses the questions he was prevented from asking by the Church, to ask and shares his findings with the reader. In the course of his lifelong search for truth, Reg Atkinson has discovered a principle which explains man's basic nature and the Church's role in the development of the infrastructures by which we live.

Often angry and highly controversial, this book cannot fail to provoke the reader into thought - if it does not spur him into action.

Atkinson, Reginald: - "Reg Atkinson was born into a fanatically religious Catholic family. At 7, he was an altar boy, at 12, he was "called by God" to the priesthood, but was expelled after only one year - by a priest who sexually abused him - for talking about girls. Condemned to "infinite torment for eternity" by his church teachings for, among other things, "crucifying God," Atkinson became a mental wreck. At 16, alone in a church begging for help and forgiveness, "God," or so he thought at that time, made him a promise. This book results from that promise. Atkinson spent 30 of his following years in Africa, where he was in turn a teacher, the general manager of a lock manufacturing company, built and managed his own farm, factory and shops and contributed a weekly column to a national newspaper. From this column, he informed his readers about the thieving practices of banks, the dishonesty of politicians and the bigotry of religious institutions. Not surprisingly, there was a price to pay. Atkinson now lives in his native England. He plays golf when he can afford it."
