Forty Years in Constantinople: The Recollections of Sir Edwin Pears, 1873-1915 is a memoir written by British journalist and diplomat, Sir Edwin Pears. The book was published in 1916 and provides a firsthand account of Pears' experiences living and working in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Pears arrived in Constantinople in 1873 and spent the next four decades reporting on the political, social, and cultural events of the Ottoman Empire. He witnessed the rise of nationalism and the decline of the Ottoman Empire, as well as the Balkan Wars and World War I. Throughout his time in Constantinople, Pears also developed close relationships with members of the Ottoman ruling class, including the sultan and his family.The book is divided into 23 chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of Pears' experiences in Constantinople. These include his observations on Ottoman society, the role of women, the Armenian genocide, and the impact of European imperialism on the Ottoman Empire. Pears also discusses his personal life, including his marriage to an Ottoman woman and his experiences raising their children in a multicultural environment.Overall, Forty Years in Constantinople provides a unique perspective on a pivotal period in Ottoman history and offers insight into the complex relationships between European powers and the Ottoman Empire.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
