In this "art biography" Donald Fagen reviews and pays tribute to the figures and cultural currents that shaped his artistic sensibility. He dissects for this purpose the eminent hipsters whose experiences illuminated his youthful dreams; composing the story of the adolescent artist whose mind was opened to the world in the sixties.

Donald Fagen obtained a university degree from Bard College, in what seemed to open an uncertain future in the world of letters, but his happy encounter on campus with Walter Becker would germinate in the formation of Steely Dan; project that would change the course of his student designs. His writings have been published in Premiere, Slate, Harper's Bazaar, and Jazz Times.
