Der Bariton Rudolf Bockelmann (1892-1958) z�hlte neben Maria M�ller, Frida Leider, Friedrich Schorr, Marcel Wittrisch, Max Lorenz und Helge Rosvaenge zu den international prominentesten Wagner-Interpreten der 20er- und 30er-Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts, geh�rte wie diese zu den festen Vertragss�ngern der Deutschen Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, den Stars der Bayreuther Festspiele und gastierte mehrfach an der Londoner Covent Garden Opera sowie der der Civic Opera in Chicago. Er galt als einer der talentiertesten Opern-S�nger f�r die Rolle des Wotan im Ring des Nibelungen sowie des Hans Sachs in den Meistersingern von N�rnberg, aber auch als Profiteur der kulturpolitischen Repression w�hrend der NS-Zeit. 1934 warb Bockelmann in der reichsweit zu empfangenden Rundfunk�bertragung direkt aus Bayreuth f�r die Zusammenlegung der �mter des Reichskanzlers und des Reichspr�sidenten auf Adolf Hitler. Die bislang einzige Biographie �ber Bockelmann erschien 1963 im Verlag eines seiner fr�heren Schulkameraden und enth�lt teils nicht nachpr�fbare Behauptungen. Historiker Ralf Bierod wertet in dem vorliegenden Werk systematisch bislang unver�ffentlichte private Briefe aus, die Rudolf Bockelmann �ber 30 Jahre hinweg an den Direktor der Burgdorfer Konservenfabrik Walter Ohk geschrieben hatte und in denen er seinen Karriereverlauf, aber auch seine andauernden Existenz�ngste schildert. So erscheint vor dem Hintergrund der NS-Musikpolitik das Bild eines innerlich zweifelnden Familienvaters und Ehemannes, der die Sehnsucht nach k�nstlerischer Freiheit und Selbstverwirklichung mit beruflicher Sicherheit und gesellschaftlicher Anerkennung in Einklang zu bringen suchte. Aufgewachsen als Sohn eines Lehrers, war er auf Wunsch des Vaters Gymnasiallehrer geworden, um zeitgleich diesen Beruf abzustreifen und seinen Traum als S�nger zu verfolgen. Nach 1945 wurde ihm sein Ruhm w�hrend der NS-Zeit zum Verh�ngnis, die angestrebte Stellung als Hochschullehrer in Westdeutschland blieb ihm versagt. Schlie lich bot ihm die DDR eine Professur in Dresden an, die er in seinen beiden letzten Lebensjahren aus�bte.
