Sima Xiangru (c. 179-118 BCE), courtesy name Changqing, was one of the ""Four Great Masters of Han Fu"" and has been honored through the ages as the ""Sage of Fu"" and ""Master of Ci Poetry."" As the Tang dynasty magistrate Chen Ziliang summarized his life: ""He stirred Lady Wenjun's heart by playing the zither, and awed the Han emperor with his recitation of fu""-epitomizing a legacy built upon the legendary romance of ""Seducing Wenjun with Music"" and the literary feat of ""Astonishing Emperor Wu with Fu."" Throughout his remarkable life, Sima Xiangru evolved from an ambitious youth in Shu to a scholar-official serving feudal lords and the imperial court. His journey was marked by legendary experiences and grand achievements, particularly his contributions to stabilizing the southwestern frontier and his literary offerings to the court, which have been celebrated for millennia. This book details the life of the Han dynasty writer Sima Xiangru and his pivotal contributions to fu poetry, critical interpretation of ancient texts, and the intellectual tradition of Shu. Beginning with his family background and early years, it focuses on his role as a foundational figure in the development of Han fu and a pioneer of Shu learning, clearly outlining his innate talent and lasting impact on classical Chinese poetry.
