The news that he had been "sacked" hit him like a punch in the gut. Hubert did not just lose his job as a coach; it felt like being kicked out of his own family. Even though he was sad and heavy-hearted about leaving in the first round, he stood tall and faced the end of his five-year term with the same quiet grace and "Tar Heel" bravery that had always been a part of his life.
His journey was a lesson in how to be strong.
Hubert was the underdog everyone thought would lose long before the "Iron Five" run in 2022, when he famously ended Mike Krzyzewski's career with a historic Final Four win. Even Dean Smith, who was a great coach, told him at first that he was not good enough for UNC. But Hubert used every "no" as motivation to practice until his shot was perfect, and he eventually set school records.
He showed that character is permanent, even when scores change.
He is still a legend not because of his last record, but because he gave everything he had to the hill.
