The Unseen Sir Alf challenges the traditional narrative of Sir Alf Ramsey's life and career, using newly uncovered evidence to reveal a very different portrait of England's World Cup-winning manager.

While exploring archival material several years ago, the author discovered a hidden chapter in Ramsey's story. Further research revealed that much of the accepted history had misunderstood the man behind the legend.

Burdened by a racist nickname, rumored to be a "gypsy," and forced to play banned Sunday football, Ramsey did not turn professional until the age of 26. His devotion to the game was all-consuming. Obsessed with learning and improving, he thought about football constantly and may have concealed aspects of what would today be recognized as neurodiversity.

As a player with Tottenham Hotspur and later as a manager with Ipswich Town and England, Ramsey achieved success through meticulous preparation, relentless practice, careful observation, and strategic planning. He was known for his disdain toward many journalists, his generosity toward supporters, his often fraught relationship with the Football Association, and his fierce loyalty to his players.

Although he appeared conventional on the surface, Ramsey was, in many ways, a radical thinker whose methods transformed the game. Following England's 1966 World Cup triumph, he became a national hero--but who was the man behind the public image?

Grant Bage has written football fanzines and academic textbooks. He plays and watches football, is an Honorary Fellow of The Historical Association and has a history PhD. His latest book, The Unseen Sir Alf: A Different Kind of Hero, draws on five years' intensive research. Grant's professional expertise as a manager, researcher and writer, plus his experiences as a fan, make him the perfect person to write this book.
