Erstmals wurde dies von den beiden Ökonomen Mehra und Prescott im Jahr 1985 untersucht. Sie versuchten, die Aktienprämie anhand eines "Consumption-based Capital Asset Pricing Model" zu erklären, was jedoch nicht gelang. Das Equity Premium Puzzle hat bis heute nicht an Relevanz verloren. Um eine Erklärung für die Aktienprämie zu erhalten, bedient sich die Forschung mittlerweile verhaltensökonomischer Ansätze, welche psychologische Bedingungen in ökonomischen Modellen integrieren. Zwei davon werden in dieser Arbeit vorgestellt. Die Myopic Loss Aversion von Benartzi und Thaler geht davon aus, dass Individuen Verluste stärker als Gewinne wahrnehmen und der Bewertungszeitraum einer Investitionsentscheidung sich auf die Aktienprämie auswirkt. Wang und Rieger hingegen sehen die Unberechenbarkeit von Aktienrenditen als Schlüssel zur Lösung des Rätsels. Beide Theorien werden beschrieben und verglichen. Auch weitere mögliche Einflussfaktoren sollen kurz dargestellt werden.
