This volume collects together Sir Alec Cairncross' most important contributions to the economic history of the post-1939 period. They address such major issues as the role of economists in the 2nd World War, the significance of the Marshall plan and Britain's relative economic decline. Alec Cairncross has alternated throughout his career between academic life and government service. Since his retirement he has written extensively on episodes in national and international affairs in which he participated. For example, planning aircraft production in wartime; the Marshall Plan; the devaluation of 1967. He has been President of the British Association, of the Scottish Economic Society and of the Royal Economic Society.
